In memory of Gloria Clarke Baylis
Gloria Leon Baylis (née Clarke) was born in Bridgetown, Barbados, in 1929. Trained as a registered nurse in England, she immigrated to Canada in 1952 and worked at several Montréal hospitals in senior nursing and instructional roles. In 1964, after being denied a nursing position at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel because she was Black, Gloria launched Canada’s first successful case of racial discrimination in employment. The conviction against Hilton of Canada was upheld in 1977, marking a landmark human rights victory. In 1983, she founded Baylis Medical Company, that grew to over 1,000 employees. The company was sold to Boston Scientific in 2022.
