Studio de la musique ancienne de Montréal

The Studio de musique ancienne de Montréal (SMAM) celebrates the vitality and sensuality of Renaissance and Baroque music. Since its founding in 1974 by Christopher Jackson, Réjean Poirier, and Hélène Dugal, SMAM has performed sacred and secular vocal works composed before 1750, faithfully recreating original ensembles, tempos, and tonal colors based on current knowledge.

Since 2015, under the musical direction of Andrew McAnerney, SMAM has brought together 12 to 18 professional singers renowned for their exceptional voices. Over 50 years, it has explored more than a thousand Renaissance and Baroque works, blending masterpieces with forgotten gems, while occasionally venturing into contemporary repertoire.

SMAM regularly collaborates with acclaimed artists and ensembles from North America and Europe. Its impressive discography includes the most recent album, L’Homme armé, dedicated to the music of the 15th-century Burgundian Court, which was a finalist for a 2022 JUNO Award.

Driven by a commitment to excellence, SMAM has established itself as a leading voice in the field of early vocal music in Canada.
